World Series Results

Our 2023 World Series was netplayed yesterday and we have a winner. The Blaze upset the Bandits to claim the title in 6 games. I've attached the final playoff LZP... though it doesn't quite include all playoff results from earlier rounds.

When you look at these numbers, you'd think the Bandits would have likely won it:

• The Bandits' hitters had a .661 OPS. Blaze hitters had a .590 OPS.
• Bandits had 69 base runners to 54 for the Blaze.
• Bandits had 17 extra-base hits to 12 for the Blaze.

However, these other things tell a different story:

• Bandits had 46 LOB, while the Blaze only left 31 runners on.
• Blaze defense turned 10 DPs (8 in the first 2 games alone) to just 2 for the Bandits' defense.
• Blaze had 11 stolen bases to only 1 for the Bandits.

Here's a game by game rundown...

Game 1: Alcantara and Manoah each went 8 innings without allowing any earned runs. There were only 5 hits combined in the game. The lone run came in the 4th inning as Justin Turner's faulty defense gave up a single and an error on the same play... allowing Gimenez to score from 1st base. Blaze win 1-0.

Game 2: Bandits had 9 base runners during Carlos Rodon's 4 innings of work, but could only score 3 runs. Meanwhile, the Blaze chipped away getting clutch hit after clutch hit off Verlander to score 5 middle inning runs. The Bandits had plenty of chances to score more runs, but grounded into key DPs to end each of the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings. It was 5 DPs total they hit into for the game. Blaze win 5-4.

Game 3: Bandits' SS Bogaerts was injured in his first AB and that caused their defense to unravel... with Arcia (their backup SS) subsequently committing a pair of errors leading to 4 unearned Blaze runs scoring and it was 6-0 Blaze after 5 innings. Bandits left on 9 runners, while Trea Turner hit 3 homers for the Blaze. Blaze win 8-3.

Game 4: Facing elimination, the Bandits rallied for an 11-inning victory (winning on Goldschmidt's walkoff homer)... despite Edwin Diaz blowing a 9th inning save chance. It probably shouldn't have made it all the way to the 11th inning as the Bandits again held a 12-5 edge in runners left of base. Bandits win 5-4.

Game 5: Again facing elimination, Justin Verlander was stellar. He faced one batter over the minimum through 7 innings before allowing a solo homer in the 8th. Three Bandits relievers slammed the door without allowing any hits after that homer to preserve the victory and necessitate a game 6. Bandits win 3-1.

Game 6: A combination of unearned runs (via an error and a wild pitch) and clutch 2-out singles gave the Blaze an 5-0 lead after 4 innings. The Bandits had plenty of chances for their own clutch 2-out hits, but left on another 9 runners as those hits did not come. Blaze win 5-1.

2023 Playoff Teams Set

The 2023 RML playoffs will look like this...

American Conference:

• The Pelicans will play the Gypsies in the 5-game wildcard series (with the Gypsies being the home team).
• The winner of the wildcard series will advance to play the Grays in the division series (with the Grays as the home team).
• The Captains will play the Blaze in the other AC divisional series (with the Blaze as the home team).

National Conference:

• The Browns and Reds are the 2 NC wildcard teams. However, the Pilgrims won the NC West with an under .500 record and don't qualify for the playoffs, the Dodgers will be the 3rd wildcard team. Since the Browns and Reds finished with identical records of 97-65, they will play a 1-game playoff series to determine who must play the Dodgers in the wildcard series. Lloyd has determined by coin flip that the Browns will be the home team for that 1-game series.
• The winner of the eventual wildcard series will advance to play the Bandits in the divisional series (with the Bandits as the home team).
• The winner of the Browns/Reds 1-game series will play the Stars in the other divisional series (the Stars will get the home field advantage because they were a division winner while their eventual opponent was the best of the 3 wildcard teams... even though they had a better record than the Stars).

League Average OPS

The 2023 MLB league average OPS ended at .734, so for our 2024 RML season, that would make:

• Pitchers unlimited at .784 and over

The online versions of the Master Roster, Player/Money Totals and Unowned Player files have been updated through the Free Agent Draft.

The updating of the Unowned Player file had nothing to do with yesterday's draft, but there was an addition made to it. Aaron Sanchez was cut at payroll time, but I mistakenly kept him on the Titans until the error was pointed out to me. He's now included in the online version.

Here is how the draft affected each team's bottom line:

Also, there were 3 instances of single year bids being over the protected rates of the players. In those cases, the protected rate is listed in the master roster... per our rule:

>>> In this draft, when single year offers are for more than the protected rate, the excess over the protected rate is considered a bonus. For example, if a veteran has a protected rate of $80,000 and the successful bid on the player is a single year offer of $101,000, $21,000 is considered a bonus and the player goes on the roster with an $80,000 salary. There are no bonuses involved with multi-year contracts.

Those instances were:

• Bandits bid 170k on Iglesias and his protected rate was 165k.
• RockHounds matched Maldonado at 81k and his protected rate was 80k.
• Whales matched on Williams at 106k and his protected rate was 105k.

Not huge changes in any of these cases, but this is the reason why their listed salary does not match what these teams paid for the above players.

Free Agent Draft Results

Our second trading period has ended. The new Master Roster, Player/Money Totals and Waiver Availables files are in the downloads section of the website if you'd like to get them.

Two players have been added to the waiver list since it was last posted: "Chang, Yu-Cheng" and "Montero, Rafael".

Next up in the RML:

• February 19th - waiver cut-down date (last chance to cut players without penalty... and last chance to clear roster space to be able to participate in the waiver draft)
• February 25th - waiver draft lists due
• February 26th - waiver draft (you must have open roster space to participate)
• February 26th - 3rd trading period begins
• March 5th - 3rd trading period ends

Steve Brubaker is handling our Waiver Draft this season. Since he's also participating in it, don't send him your lists just yet. He's not going to be ready for lists until around the 23rd. He'll make that announcement when he's ready to receive lists.

Because of the draft being pushed back, it only seems logical to extend the Second Trading Period an extra week... and it'll now run through February 12th.

The new Waiver Cut-Down Date will be February 19th (your last chance to cut players without penalty).

In-Season Trading

Our in-season trading period will be starting on June 1st. Please report all trades to Mark.

Here are the particulars from our Constitution:

Beginning with the 2019 RML season, there will be an in-season trading period in June.

Trades can be made during the month of June, from the 1st to the 26th, to take effect during the July block.

Trades would not have to be "even." To compensate for "uneven" trades, teams may select from the unowned players to fill their playing roster back up to 30.

Teams must cut down to 30 if they end up with more. These moves would be made on June 27th.

"Added" players may not be retained at the conclusion of the season--they will go back into unowned when the season ends.

Players "cut" for June trades are not "pick-up-able" by others on the 27th.

"Added" players must be paid their minimum RML salary, based on experience, for the rest of the season.

Teams needing “added” players will pick them up in reverse standing order as of the end of the June block.

Tie-breaker will be worst division record.

Teams may have more than 45 minor leaguers after the June trading period is completed.

The post-Draft Report

The Unowned Player Draft went fairly smoothly this afternoon. The results are posted on the Message Board (Unowned Player Draft forum, 2020 Unowned Player Draft topic).

All in all, 124 players were selected for a total of 9,443K. The biggest spenders were the Expos and Dodgers... doling out 946K and 878K respectively. The TinCaps nabbed 13 players.. most of any team.

Coincidentally, there was a tie at the co-highest bid... made on Luis Arraez at 303K... by the Captains and the TinCaps. The Captains narrowly edged out the TinCaps in the tiebreaker by being #2 in reverse finish order to the #4 TinCaps. Zach Pleasac drew the other co-highest bid at 303K by the Dodgers.

The Master Roster and Player/Money Totals files have been uploaded to the website and include the results of the draft. In addition to the money totals being updated, the player totals have also been updated in the Player/Money Totals file.

Trading will remain open until February 1st and the final day to cut players without penalty is February 8th.

This year's Waiver Draft will be held on February 22nd. The deadline for submitting lists is Friday the 21st at midnight. Since the Blaze will not be participating, you can start sending your draft lists to me anytime. I'm not anticipating a lot of action since most teams are either maxed out or currently over the limit of players.

Concerning the preliminary free agent that was recently posted, the four Colt .45s' players being offered free agency were mistakenly marked as retaining answering rights when they do not. That's been corrected in the current file.

RML Update

The updated Current Money Totals file in the Downloads dropdown now reflects finish money, debits/credit from trades, bonus money and playoff earnings. It's even more up to date than the file I sent out last night.

They don't include any player totals for major leaguers or minor leaguers. Note, the Pelicans and River Dogs info (which is highlighted) in both of these files reflects the fact that they've already submitted their 2020 payrolls.

Which reminds me that payrolls for the 2020 season are due by thew end of the day on November 9th... as are our $10 annual league dues (which need to be sent to Lloyd if it's in the form of a check... or to me if you'd like to pay in some other manner... they I'll forward it to Lloyd).

Master Roster Updated

The RML Master Roster file in the Downloads dropdown has been updated to include 2 new columns showing contract status for the upcoming season. Highlighted cells in those 2 columns indicate an expired contract.

It has also had the new 'Bats' column fixed. Hopefully they are all correct now.

RML Update

Now that we've re-instating league dues, the preferred method of paying them is to mail a $10 check to Lloyd (made out to him personally) at his address listed in the Manager Directory. The deadline is November 9th.

We now have a 'Rule Change and Voting' committee that will be in charge of those areas... including making the rules governing rule changes and voting. The 3-member committee consists of Dave Scott (Twins), Mike Borzenski (Mudhens) and George Calage (Reds). They're going to be monitoring the message board rule change forum, but you can and should interact with them concerning your ideas too.

The first playoff LZP has been sent, so we can get the wildcard series started. The matchups are: Monarchs at Blaze in the AC and Reds at Yellow Jackets in the NC. These results are due to be reported to Mark by October 15th.

Several files in the downloads dropdown have been updated (and they were also included earlier today in a group email). The files are:

1. Preliminary unowned player list complete with usage and OPS numbers for all players and a position summary for each player from baseball-reference.com.
2. A new 'current player / money totals' file in a new format. I converted it into a spreadsheet since it lends itself better to that format. I'm not going to updating the player totals until after payrolls are submitted in November. Only money is being updated actively for now.
3. The RML master roster file which I've added 15 columns to the right of the historical columns. Most of the new columns are self explanatory, but here's an explanation of some things that might not be. Some players in the 'Protected Rate' column are highlighted. Those are the players eligible for long term contracts. A small number of players in the 'Minimum Offer' column are highlighted. Those are the players who were in contracts needing to be bought out because they aren't carded, with the number being the amount necessary to buy them out. The 'Position(s)' column is taken from baseball-reference.com (an asterisk before a position means they played 2/3 of their teams games at that position; everything after the slash means they played less than 10 games at those positions (I think D must mean DH). Finally, as a reminder (even though this isn't new), in the 'Ct' column (usually showing the length of a contract), there are some players showing a 'P'. That means the player was an in-season pickup that must be given back after the season ends.

In all of these files, I've named the active sheet using the date it was last modified. You can find this date in the lower left corner as the sheet name (today's files have their sheets named 2019-10-06).

2019 League Average OPS

Depending on which source you're using, there was a little disagreement in the league average OPS for the 2019 season. ESPN listed it as .757, while others (including Baseball-Reference) listed it as .758.

So, I decided to make an exact calculation using the following:

(42040 Hits + 15895 BB + 1984 HBP) / (166651 AB + 15895 BB + 1984 HBP + 1150 SF) = .32270 OBP

72469 TB / 166651 AB = .43485 SLG

Using standard rounding gives us a .758 (which was .75755 before rounding) league average OPS.

Hitters at or below .633 will be considered unlimited.

Pitchers at or above .808 will be considered unlimited.
